Campbell & Vogler · Mask of the Monomyth
The Threshold Guardian
“You shall not pass this boundary until you have proven your strength, your wit, and your worth.”
The structural gatekeeper standing between the hero and the special world. Not necessarily a villain - often a neutral force whose job is to confirm the hero's readiness. A Threshold Guardian who is properly met can become a loyal ally on the far side.
Core Desire
To protect the boundaries of the special world and weed out the uncommitted.
Core Fear
Unworthiness crossing into the sacred, and chaos spilling into ordered realms.
Core Lie
Only the brutal deserve passage; empathy and compromise are disqualifying flaws.
Strategy
Test, block, interrogate, and present puzzles or force.
Gift
Builds the hero's resilience; bypassed, becomes a powerful ally.
Trap (Shadow)
Triggering paralysis, cowardice, or a turn back to the ordinary world.

CanonicalThe Threshold Guardian - Tests, Gatekeeping, Rule-Enforcement
The one who bars the gate - not to defeat the seeker but to test readiness. Rule-as-authority rather than authority-from-center.
Added Justice (XI) and Reformer (Type 1). Both were routed elsewhere without noticing that rule-enforcement is threshold-function.
