Debates
Not every mapping on this site is settled. Some are editorial bets the canon does not obviously support; others are structural choices working practitioners dispute. These are the ones worth arguing about — with the case for, the case against, and where this site lands.
Mirrors to try on, not a diagnosis. Where we infer, we say so.
Where the arguments sit
Each debate placed by the site's confidence in its stance and how much of the map rides on it.
Structural meta-debates
Arguments about the shape of the map itself, not individual mappings.
Is Liminal Territory a real structural finding or an over-reach?
Offered as a hypothesis, not a finding. Retained for now because it surfaces the between-phase that the four-fold structures elide.
Low confidenceStructuralUnresolvedShould MBTI be included at all, given its psychometric problems?
Included with caveats surfaced inline. MBTI entries are usually moderate-or-below confidence; the /mbti/about page carries the psychometric-honesty section.
Moderate confidenceScopedWorking hypothesisCan a masculine-coded developmental arc (Boy → Man) serve as a universal axis?
The masculine-coding is named, not erased. We present the arc as one developmental structure, not the developmental structure. The counter-canon is linked from every KWML and Hero's Journey page as first-class parallel.
Moderate confidenceStructuralUnresolvedMurdock's Heroine's Journey vs. Campbell's monomyth
Both arcs presented as first-class parallel structures. /about/counter-canon carries Murdock; Hero's Journey system pages link to it by default.
High confidenceStructuralResolved with caveatsRiso-Hudson arrows vs. Naranjo's later disavowal
Arrows retained as phenomenology, not structure. Arrow-derived mappings are tagged speculative or contested; see the cluster editorial notes on Death-Rebirth and Liminal Territory.

What the map does not resolve
Open questions the site carries without deciding — surfaced so readers can weigh them.
- 01Does Liminal Territory hold up as a fourth structural pole, or collapse back to parent clusters?
- 02Is the counter-canon (Bolen/Murdock/Estés) at true parity, or risks repeating the appendix-pattern Murdock named?
- 03If the developmental arc is masculine-coded, is explicit labeling sufficient - or does presenting it at all harm non-male readers?
- 04Should MBTI be demoted given its psychometric status? We retain it for pedagogical accessibility, with caveats.
- 05Should Hero's-Journey cast be framed as Vogler's flexible functions throughout, or Campbell's character-types where tradition does?
