Campbell & Vogler · Mask of the Monomyth

The Mentor

The answers you seek are already within you - but you must learn to see past the illusions of the world.

A wise, experienced figure who prepares the hero with training, insight, or a talisman - and then steps aside. The Mentor is the activated 'Wise Old One,' the sign that the psyche is gathering its internal resources. Their great work is to become unnecessary.
